Does anyone out there have tiny humans who have a shared bedroom? ‘Cause we’re about to embark on this crazy journey and I have no clue what to expect.
Let’s start with a mommy confession, shall we? Baby Bear is 9 months old and still sleeping in our room. Yes, IN. OUR. ROOM. Sometime in the last couple of months it got too crazy to try and sneak into the room at night so Daddy Bear and I have been relegated to our sectional in the living room. I kid you friggin’ not, this is our life right now.
Since Brother Bear and Baby Bear are 19 months apart they will be sharing a room. I’m not sure how moms get their kids to share a room from day 1 but I’ve been anxious about the transition since day 1. 9 months later and I think it’s about time to get them into a shared bedroom. What’s sad is that in terms of his bedroom, poor Brother Bear has been getting the middle child treatment. He was living in what basically equated to a storage closet. We stuck Sister Bear’s old toddler bed in there (which was the same awful colour as my hideous parquet flooring).
He had clothes that needed to be sorted and were just lying in bins. His walls were a throwback to 2000 with a tan colour only a grandmother could love and his blinds were letting in too much light during the summer months.
Insert bedroom makeover to give the boys something that was new to them both (and keep my mind off the impending transition). The problem is, I’m on mat leave so we’re not exactly rolling in cash, which meant that I was on a strict budget. We reused the blackout curtains Sister Bear had in her room and I painted the toddler bed myself.
When Jessica from Marigold Prints offered to host an amazing giveaway for my awesome mom friends (that’s all of you by the way), I jumped at the chance to snag some cool prints for the boys as well as Sister Bear.
I decided to go with a black and white theme for their room so I started by painting the old toddler bed white. I didn’t want the room to read too stark and minimalist so I chose some woodland creature prints to make it feel a bit warmer.
The 2 bed sheets and blanket are from Winners for a total of about $30. Now, I have a pretty good skeleton for the room. The walls need some more décor and I’d like to get a larger patterned area rug. I’m still missing the cube storage from Ikea to go in place of the tiny kitchen but so far it works.
The best part is that as soon as Brother Bear saw his newly updated shared bedroom, he transitioned himself right out of his crib and into the toddler bed. He literally sleeps 12-13 hours in his big boy bed without a peep. He actually sleeps better now than he did in his crib – go figure! Here I thought we were going to have to do a whole song and dance to make it work and all he needed was a room update. I had planned to write all about the transition but he went and did it himself!
Moral of the story: if you want to transition a toddler from crib to toddler bed, redo their room!
For those of you who have children that share a room, what age did they start sharing? What are your expert tips for getting them to co-exist and actually sleep in a room?
I’ll update you on what happens when we actually move Baby Bear into their room shortly…
